PETITJEAN SWISS MASTER VICE
One quickly becomes addicted to everything Petitjean, from his top quality CDC to his Magic Tool and reengineered tying tools, simply because they showcase his sheer ingenuity and high quality craftsmanship. The Swiss Master Vice is certainly no exception, although the high price relative to many other rotary vices made me think long and hard before purchasing whether my addiction had not clouded my better judgement. After all, I'd tied on a Regal for a mere R300 for years. Despite this, I have absolutely no buyer's regret. The vice is a marvel of precision engineering, quickly converting from C-clamp to base version and very portable due to it's compact design and light weight. Despite this, it is rock steady and the precision head is easily and instantly adjustable to accept a very wide range of hook sizes. The spring incorporated into the head also ensure that the hook or finished fly remains in place, even when not fully clamped, allowing one to make fine adjustments of rotational alignment before solidly, but not excessively, clamping down. I don't typically tie tube flies, but the incorporated tube mandrels are a magnificent design element. So too is the degree of motion offered by the assembly allowing one to position the head away from, but close to the surface of a table, thereby reducing fatigue. The C-clamp is solid but also easily unfastened. Rotational alignment of the head is easy, especially using the alignment guide and the motion is smooth as silk while the tension nut allows one to easily rotate the head while avoiding slippage, or one can fasten it solidly. I would have thought that a bobbin rest would come standard rather than as an optional extra, but the modular design which allows one to add other features such as a profile plate for a high contrast background - useful in photography - as well as a tool holder arm (one can position more than one) and wastebasket, allows the cost to be spread more comfortably. At first I thought Marc had overlooked a material holder but, he has two, in the form of rubber o-rings placed laterally on either side of the arm. This is a superb product!
